June 23, 2025Already Gainesville’s top master-planned community, Oakmont also is a star choice for families. April 1, 2025Regardless of the reasons you may be searching for a new custom Florida home in the Gainesville area, you’ll never have to search for fun things to do. That includes one of north central Florida’s most popular outdoor pursuits — equestrian activities. Two equestrian facilities are within an easy drive of Oakmont, which is Gainesville’s premier master-planned community located on the city’s bustling southwest side. That makes it particularly handy to the Alachua County Agriculture and Equestrian Center, and the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. And there are multiple equestrian trails to explore in nearby state parks, plus farms and providers who offer guided rides. Equestrian fun isn’t the only outdoor recreation option in north central Florida. This region of the Sunshine State is awash with freshwater lakes, rivers and springs, plus trails, state and national parks and preserves for boating, fishing, hiking, cycling and other activities. But if you and any family members appreciate the opportunity to saddle up or to enjoy a horse show, you’re covered. Ask Oakmont neighbors for recommendations, and folks at facilities and parks listed below for info about trail rides, or even finding a new berth for your own horse. Here’s the scoop on horsing around near Oakmont. Alachua County Agriculture and Equestrian Center This versatile facility is in Newberry, approximately 20 minutes and 11 miles from Oakmont. On the horse front, it features a sizable covered arena, outdoor complex and five barns. A “Walk Trot Canter Dressage Show” was recently on its schedule, along with local 4-H Clubs events. World Equestrian Center in Ocala Known as the “Horse Capital of the World,” Ocala is one of the United States’ top locations for farms, breeding, training and racing, and horse-centric events. It’s the winter home of many famous thoroughbreds, owners and trainers. The World Equestrian Center features multiple event centers, barn complexes, an on-site branch of the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital, The Equestrian Hotel, and myriad dining and shopping options. It’s also open to the public and hosts a year-round calendar of shows. Plus, it’s only 40 miles and under an hour south of Oakmont. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park Florida’s first state preserve is a treasure trove of outdoor recreation, all of it located only minutes southeast of Oakmont. Equine enthusiasts in particular can try to spot Paynes Prairie’s herds of wild horses and bison. Check with rangers at the visitor center once you arrive for tips on where and how to safely see the herds. Paynes Prairie also is home to multiple trails, some of which are available for horseback riding. These include the 6.5-mile Chacala Trail, and the 16-mile Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail.
