One of the awesome things about Oakmont is the never-ending opportunities for local pursuits.
Gainesville’s top master-planned community is located on its bustling west side, with easy access to a lively downtown and some of Florida’s best outdoor recreational sites.
Build or buy a new custom Florida home at Oakmont, and you won’t lack for leisure activities either. The resort-style swimming pools, fitness center, event lawn, sports courts, and a busy calendar of community events offer plenty of fun right at home.
But outside the community? Gainesville’s status as hometown for the University of Florida, Santa Fe College and active arts, cultural and learning scenes offer innumerable opportunities to experience something new.

Square dancing
Learn how to Do-Si-Do with the Grand Squares Square Dance Club. The group offers $5 beginner classes each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., at Meizon Church in Gainesville. It’s a unique way to learn a new recreational skill, be active and meet other dance enthusiasts.
Best of all, you don’t need to bring a partner or dress up. Learn new square-dance moves with each class and join the club if Do-Si-Do-ing becomes your jam. If you think you might have two left feet on a dance floor, this could be the cure!

Floral design
Intrigued by gorgeous floral centerpieces you see at special events?
Learn how to create your own floral masterpiece (and the skills to do so) with beginner classes at the Gainesville Garden Club. The Club offers six classes taught by an accomplished floral designer that build on lessons from class to class. It’s not free ($120 as of this writing), but if you love floral arrangement and gardening, it might be the gateway to your next new hobby.

UF athletic facility tours
Such a unique opportunity for college sports fans, especially friends, family members and Oakmont neighbors keen on the University of Florida Gators. Thought its Swamp Moments program, the university’s athletic association offers tours of athletic facilities such as football’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — known popularly as The Swamp — and basketball’s Exactech Arena at Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
There’s a fee, of course, and participants must have game tickets for game-day tours. But the behind-the-scene access might be next-level experiences for Oakmont sports enthusiasts.

Haile Quarry zipline
Another unique activity near Oakmont, in the nearby town of Newberry. Six ziplines of varying heights and lengths cross a defunct phosphate mine that was active from 1925-1975. Now a lake rimmed by limestone cliffs, it’s an impressive setting as visitors fly over it. The Haile Quarry zipline park boasts Florida’s longest line (the 1,303-foot Double Dragon) and discounts are offered on Fridays.
